About Fences

Find all the fencing materials for your farm at FG Edwards, your farm fencing specialist in the Eastern Townships since 1928. Whether you are installing an electric fence for rotational grazing, a knotted wire fence for cattle or protective netting for the vegetable garden, we have the components, the expertise and the inventory to complete your project.

Our fencing department is the most comprehensive in the region with nearly 400 products. We offer mains , solar and battery- powered energizers for electrical systems, a full range of conductors and insulators for every type of post, knotted wire and mesh for permanent fencing, as well as all the tools and hardware needed for the installation and maintenance of your fences.

Our consultants in West Brome and Bedford understand the realities of the terrain—soil types, hilly topography, and animal species to contain—and can help you design a fencing system tailored to your farm. Also, check out our livestock section for information on feeding and equipment for your animals.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does an electric fence work

An electric fence system has four main components: an energizer that generates brief high-voltage, low-amperage pulses; conductors (wire, tape, or rope) that carry the pulse along the fence line; insulators that prevent current from leaking into posts; and a grounding system that completes the circuit through the soil. When an animal touches the wire and the ground simultaneously, the circuit closes and the animal receives a short, uncomfortable but harmless shock that teaches it to stay away from the fence. The shock is designed to be memorable but safe, deterring animals without causing injury.

How to choose the right fence energizer for my farm

Choosing the right energizer depends on four key factors. Power source: use a mains-powered 110 V unit if an outlet is nearby for maximum reliability, a solar model for remote pastures, or a 12 V battery unit for portable setups. Fence length: plan for approximately 1 joule of output per kilometre of fence under normal vegetation conditions. Vegetation: heavy brush or tall grass touching the wire drains power, so double your joule estimate for overgrown areas. Animal type: cattle and horses are relatively easy to contain with 3 000 V at end of line, while sheep, goats, and wildlife require at least 4 000 V and a more powerful unit.

Why is grounding so important for an electric fence

The grounding system is the most commonly overlooked component, yet it determines whether your fence delivers an effective shock. The pulse travels from the energizer through the conductor; when an animal touches the wire, current passes through the animal into the soil and returns to the energizer via the ground rods. Poor grounding means the circuit cannot close properly, resulting in a weak shock even with a powerful energizer. Install at least one galvanized ground rod per joule of energizer output, driven at least 1.8 m deep into moist soil, spaced at least 3 m apart. Never use rebar—rust on its surface acts as an insulator.

What is the difference between wire, tape, and rope conductors

Each conductor type suits different fencing applications:

  • Metal wire (aluminum or galvanized steel) offers the best conductivity and longest lifespan—ideal for permanent fences over long distances where low resistance per metre matters most
  • Electric tape (12–40 mm wide) is highly visible, making it the preferred choice for horse paddocks where animals need to see the fence, though it catches wind
  • Electric rope combines visibility with wind resistance and is excellent for rotational grazing, rolling easily onto a reel for quick pasture moves

For fences longer than 5 km, prioritize conductors with low ohms-per-metre to minimize voltage loss at the end of the line.

How to test and troubleshoot an electric fence

Regular testing prevents animals from learning that a fence is weak. Use a digital voltmeter to measure voltage at multiple points—a healthy fence should read at least 3 000–4 000 V at the farthest point from the energizer. If voltage is low, work systematically: check the energizer output first, then test the ground system by short-circuiting the fence 100 m away and measuring ground rod voltage (should read under 200 V). If grounding is fine, walk the line looking for vegetation contact, broken insulators, or corroded connections. Fence-line fault finders show the direction of current flow and help pinpoint exactly where losses are occurring along your fence.

Why is my electric fence losing voltage

Voltage loss is the most common electric fence problem and usually has one of these causes:

  • Vegetation contact—grass or branches touching the wire drain power to the ground; clear a 30 cm strip under the fence or use a more powerful energizer
  • Poor grounding—insufficient or corroded ground rods prevent the circuit from completing properly; add more galvanized rods in moist soil
  • Faulty insulators—cracked or UV-degraded insulators leak current into posts; inspect and replace damaged ones, especially at corners and tension points
  • Bad connections—corroded splices or loose connectors create resistance; use proper crimp connectors and check all joints seasonally

Test at multiple points along the line to narrow down where the loss is occurring before walking the full fence.

What is the difference between knotted wire and welded mesh fencing

Knotted wire is a grid of galvanized wires joined by mechanical knots, designed to flex under impact without permanently deforming. When a cow or horse pushes against it, the knots absorb the force and the fence springs back. This makes it the standard for permanent livestock perimeter fencing.

Welded mesh uses wires fused at each intersection, creating a rigid grid with finer openings. It excels at keeping small animals out of gardens and protecting poultry from predators. However, welded mesh is more brittle under repeated heavy impact. Choose knotted wire for cattle and horse pastures; choose mesh or hex netting for gardens, poultry coops, and small animal exclusion.

What type of fence posts should I use in Quebec

Quebec’s freeze-thaw cycles and rocky soils influence post selection:

  • Pressure-treated wood posts are strongest for corners, end assemblies, and gates—bury about one-third of the length for stability in the clay soils typical of the Eastern Townships
  • Steel T-posts are economical and quick to install for straight-line sections—they pound in without digging and can be repositioned easily when reorganizing pastures
  • Plastic or fibreglass posts are ideal for temporary electric fences and rotational grazing—lightweight, inherently insulating (no insulator needed), and they flex without breaking in rocky ground

Space posts 8–12 m apart for electric fences and 3–5 m for knotted wire fences.

How to protect my fence energizer from lightning

A multi-kilometre electric fence acts as a giant antenna during thunderstorms. A single nearby strike can destroy an unprotected energizer instantly—an investment of several hundred dollars lost in a fraction of a second. Install a lightning diverter between the energizer and the fence line to channel excess energy into the ground before it reaches your unit. Use a dedicated grounding system for the diverter separate from the fence’s main grounding, spaced at least 10 m apart. In the Eastern Townships, where summer storms are frequent and intense, lightning protection is not optional—it’s essential insurance for your equipment investment.
