Frequently Asked Questions
What size Canarm HVR fan do I need for my barn?
Canarm offers the HVR drum fan in 24" (61 cm) and 36" (91 cm) diameters. Selection depends on your barn's volume and ventilation requirements:
- 24" HVR: Suitable for smaller stalls, farrowing rooms, horse stalls, or supplementary circulation in a larger barn. Ideal for focused airflow in a specific pen area.
- 36" HVR: Better suited for large open livestock buildings — dairy barns, poultry grow-out barns, swine finishing buildings. Moves significantly more air per hour (CFM) than the 24" model.
A general rule for summer ventilation in Canadian cattle barns: target 4–8 complete air changes per hour. To calculate: (Barn length × width × height in feet × target ACH) ÷ 60 = CFM required. Then select fans whose combined CFM output meets or exceeds this target.
For large operations, multiple fans positioned to create cross-ventilation (intake on one side, exhaust on the other) outperform a single large fan in the centre.
Can the Canarm HVR fan be used in a poultry barn?
Yes — the Canarm HVR drum fan is suitable for poultry barns as well as cattle, swine, and equine buildings. Key considerations for poultry use:
- Dust management: Poultry barns generate significant feather dust and dander. Clean the fan motor housing and blade assembly regularly — dust accumulation on motor windings can cause overheating. The HVR's enclosed motor provides some protection against dust ingress.
- Positioning: In broiler or laying hen barns, position fans to create a tunnel ventilation effect during summer — fans at one end draw air through the length of the barn, cooling birds through the evaporative effect of airflow across their bodies.
- Speed selection: The two-speed motor allows reduced airflow during mild weather (when chicks are young and sensitive to drafts) and full airflow during heat stress periods.
- Seasonal use: The rubber wheels allow repositioning between summer ventilation duty and winter rest without floor damage.
Does the Canarm HVR fan run on standard 120V farm power?
Yes — the Canarm HVR drum fan operates on standard 120V / 60Hz single-phase power, the same supply used for standard farm outlets. No special wiring or 240V service is required.
The two-speed motor draws approximately:
- 24" model: ~1.5–2.5 amps (varies by speed setting)
- 36" model: ~3–4 amps (varies by speed setting)
Both models can be plugged directly into a standard 15A GFCI outlet, which is the recommended outlet type for any electrical equipment in a barn environment. Multiple fans can share a circuit provided the total amperage does not exceed 80% of the circuit breaker rating (i.e., no more than 12A continuous load on a 15A circuit).
The 3-metre power cord on the HVR provides sufficient reach from most outlet positions in standard barn configurations.
