About Leafy vegetables
Leafy greens are among the most rewarding crops in Quebec gardens: fast-growing, productive over a long period, and harvestable by continuous cutting, they grace the table with fresh salads from early spring until the first autumn frosts. FG Edwards offers a wide selection of leafy green seeds, including various varieties of lettuce, spinach, Swiss chard, arugula, mesclun, mustard greens, pak choi, and other flavorful greens.
Most leafy vegetables are sown directly in the ground as soon as the soil is workable, often as early as April in the Eastern Townships. Lettuce and spinach prefer the cool temperatures of spring and autumn, while Swiss chard produces reliably all summer long in the heat. Successive sowings every two to three weeks ensure a continuous harvest without either surplus or shortage. Some varieties are very well suited to growing in containers and window boxes for balconies and patios.
