About Root vegetables
Root vegetables are a staple of the Quebec garden: easy to grow, bountiful, and perfect for winter storage, they allow you to enjoy summer harvests long after the first frosts. FG Edwards offers a fine selection of root vegetable seeds adapted to our soils and climate, including carrots, radishes, beets, parsnips, turnips, rutabagas, leeks, celeriac, and other varieties that thrive in the Eastern Townships.
Most root vegetables are sown directly in the ground in spring, as soon as the soil can be worked. Radishes, the fastest to mature, are ready to harvest in less than four weeks and make excellent intercrops. Carrots and parsnips develop a richer flavor after a light autumn frost, making them particularly appealing for gardens in the Eastern Townships. Beets offer the dual advantage of edible leaves and nutritious roots. Deep, loose, well-drained soil free of stones is essential for producing beautiful, well-formed roots.
To ensure successful root vegetable cultivation, remember to prepare your soil thoroughly with our fertilizers and amendments.
