100% Pure Kentucky Bluegrass (Poa pratensis) – the gold standard for dense, self-repairing, and professional-looking lawns. No species blends, no compromises: just the species that park superintendents, sports fields, and demanding homeowners have chosen for decades.

Why Pure Kentucky Bluegrass?

Most lawn seeds sold in Quebec are multi-species blends. Blends have their advantages – diversity, resilience, adaptation to different conditions. Our TERRAIN range offers precisely these optimized solutions.

But some homeowners want something else. They want the density of a golf course, the dark green color of a magazine page, and the self-repairing ability that only a pure rhizomatous grass can offer. This is exactly what Kentucky bluegrass delivers when planted as a monoculture.

What this species does better than all others

  • Maximum Density – Kentucky bluegrass spreads via underground rhizomes. Over time, it forms such a tight mat that weeds struggle to establish.
  • Self-Repair – Areas damaged by foot traffic, animals, or winter conditions heal themselves. No other turfgrass species does this as well.
  • Dark Green Color – The classic Kentucky bluegrass color is intense, deep, and persists throughout the season with proper maintenance.
  • Cold Resistance – Tolerates harsh winters, freeze-thaw cycles, and recovers vigorously in spring.
  • Longevity – A well-established Kentucky bluegrass lawn can last for decades without needing to be entirely reseeded.

What this species demands in return

Kentucky bluegrass is not an easy species. If you're looking for a low-maintenance lawn, consider TERRAIN ARIDE or TERRAIN VIVANT instead. Pure bluegrass requires:

  • Full Sun – Minimum 6 hours of direct sun per day. Does not tolerate shade.
  • Patience During Establishment – Germination from 14 to 21 days, and it takes a full season to achieve a mature lawn. This is slower than blends containing ryegrass.
  • Regular Watering – Especially during establishment and heatwaves. Roots are shallow compared to tall fescue.
  • Annual Fertilization – To maintain density and color, Kentucky bluegrass needs nitrogen in spring and fall.
  • Regular Mowing – Ideal height of 6 to 8 cm. Mow once a week during the active growing season.

Who this product is designed for

This 22.68 kg bag is for the homeowner who takes their lawn seriously. You've probably already tried generic blends, and now you want something more specialized. You are ready to invest the time and care needed to achieve a superior result. You have space: a significant residential lot, a rural property, or a prestigious area well-exposed to the sun.

If you're looking for a more versatile solution or one more tolerant of varied conditions, our TERRAIN range offers five blends designed for different situations. 100% Kentucky bluegrass is the specialist's choice.

Seeding Rate

Apply this product at the following rates:

  • New Lawn: 5 kg / 100 m² (one 22.68 kg bag covers approximately 450 m²)
  • Overseeding: 3 kg / 100 m² (one bag covers approximately 750 m²)

Note: This product consists of 50% pure seed and 50% inert clay coating, which improves soil contact, uniform spreader distribution, and germination. The rates indicated above account for the coating. Do not apply the rates you find online for uncoated seed – you will get a lawn that is too sparse.

When to sow in Quebec

Two optimal windows:

  • Spring: May 1st to June 15th, once the soil has reached 15 °C.
  • Late Summer: August 20th to September 15th. This is the preferred window for Kentucky bluegrass: the soil is still warm, humidity is more stable, and weed pressure is reduced.

How to sow

  1. Prepare the soil – Work the surface, remove stones and debris, level the ground. For a new lawn, add 2 to 3 cm of good garden soil if the existing soil is poor.
  2. Sow at 5 kg / 100 m² – Use a rotary or drop spreader for uniform distribution. Cross your passes (half the quantity in one direction, the other half perpendicular). The clay coating helps with regular distribution.
  3. Lightly cover – Rake or use a light roller to ensure good seed-to-soil contact. Seeds should not be buried more than 6 mm deep.
  4. Water – Keep the soil consistently moist until germination. Several small waterings are better than one heavy watering that displaces the seeds.
  5. Be patient – First germination around day 14. Initial mowing when the grass reaches 8 to 10 cm. Avoid intense foot traffic for the first 6 weeks.
