How to choose your electric fence energizer (joules, length, animal, vegetation)

The energizer is the heart of your fence. Everything else – the wire, insulators, posts, grounding – only serves to carry what this box produces. And it's precisely the part most people choose incorrectly: at the lowest price, or by copying a table found on a French website that knows nothing of our winters, our summer vegetation, or the products actually sold here. Good news: once you know what to look for, the choice becomes simple. It all boils down to one honest figure, the joule, and four questions about your situation. Here's how to do the math for a Quebec fence, in the units you actually use. The joule, the number that doesn't lie When shopping, you'll see two types of promises on the box: a number of kilometers (or miles) of fence, and a number of joules. The two are not equal. Mileage is a laboratory figure. It describes a perfect fence: a single, clean wire, with no grass touching it, in dry weather. Nobody has such a fence, especially not in Quebec between June and August. Manufacturers even state it in black and white: Gallagher advertises its ranges for a "clean fence." As soon as you add wires, dew, and tall grass, the actual range shrinks. The joule, on the other hand, measures the energy the device releases with each pulse. It's the reserve your fence draws on to push current through a long line, multiple wires, and vegetation. Some devices display stored joules (total reserve) and output joules (what actually goes into the wire): the latter is more indicative, but the former remains an honest basis for comparison between two models. The rule of thumb: the longer your fence, the more wires it has, and the more likely it is to be overgrown with vegetation, the more joules you need. Voltage alone says nothing. A small device displays a good voltage on an empty fence, then collapses as soon as a clump of cattails touches the lower wire in July. The four questions that determine your choice What animal? A horse, a cow, a chicken threatened by a raccoon and a deer in the garden do not require the same thing. The question is not raw power, but the objective: containing a calm animal already accustomed to the fence requires less than repelling a hungry predator or penetrating the thick coat of an animal in the dead of winter. What length, how many wires? What matters is not the perimeter of the land, but the total length of energized wire. An enclosure of 800 m (2625 ft) around with 4 wires is not 800 m to power, it's 3,200 m (10500 ft). Always multiply the perimeter by the number of energized wires. What vegetation? In Quebec, vegetation pressure is seasonal and strong. A fence well-sized in May can weaken in July when the grass has grown thirty centimeters: each moist blade touching the wire is a small leak. A line along a ditch or woodland requires more reserve than a closely mowed line. What power source? Do you have an outlet nearby, or is the fence at the end of a field without electricity? Mains (110 V), 12 V battery, or solar: the answer guides the entire range to consider. We'll come back to this below. How many volts, and joules, depending on the animal What matters in the end is the voltage maintained on the line, measured with a tester. Here are the practical targets generally aimed for, keeping in mind that a thick winter coat or vegetation forces you to aim higher for the shock to pass through. Poultry and small domestic animals are content with about 2,000 to 4,000 volts. Horses, sensitive and quick-witted, learn the fence with a clear shock of about 3,000 volts; there's no need to brutalize them. Cattle are practically contained around 3,000 to 5,000 volts, more for a bull or a herd testing the fence. Predators (fox, raccoon, coyote, and bears with dense fur) require the most, often 5,000 volts and up, because it's necessary to penetrate the fur and overcome a strong motivation to enter. In terms of joules, the logic follows. A small chicken coop or a short domestic enclosure thrives with a fraction of a joule, provided there's impeccable grounding. A horse paddock is content with a small, clear, and reliable device. A cattle pasture, with its lengths and vegetation, quickly moves into the mid-range. The method for translating all this into joules follows in the next section; for target voltages and their measurement, see What voltage for what animal. Doing the math: a method that accounts for Quebec Here's how to size without being misled by the numbers on the box. First, the actual line length: your fence perimeter multiplied by the number of energized wires. Then, the key point: the range advertised by the manufacturer is a clean fence range, meaning a laboratory ceiling. In real conditions, with Quebec summer vegetation, plan for roughly one-third of that range as a reliable working length. In other words, choose a device whose "clean fence" range is at least about three times your actual line length. This factor of three is your vegetation buffer, built in advance. For most small to medium Quebec installations, you'll quickly see that length is almost never the limiting factor: the advertised ranges are enormous compared to the actual distances of a few acres. The real criterion then becomes the joule reserve, to contend with vegetation, winter fur, and long lines. It's on joules that you choose, not on kilometers. A 10-acre (about 4 ha) cattle pasture, fenced with 4 wires, has a perimeter of roughly 2,640 ft (805 m), or about 10,560 ft (3.2 km) of line. The factor of three requires a clean range of about 9.7 km (6 miles), which any mid-range mains model largely covers. The decision therefore hinges on joules: for 4 wires in summer grass, a Gallagher M120 (1.2 J) or M160 (1.6 J) provides the reserve that a small device wouldn't have. A 1-acre horse paddock with 3 rows is about 840 ft (256 m) around, or about 2,520 ft (770 m) of line. Short: length is not an issue, you choose for a clear, reliable shock and focus effort on solid grounding for winter. A small mains device, or a Parmak model designed for horses, is sufficient. A chicken coop protected by netting or a few wires represents little length, but the challenge is to maintain a high deterrent shock: a small device with reserve, perfectly grounded, positioned so that the predator touches a wire at the right moment. A sizing calculator adapted to Quebec (Canadian products, local units, winter assumptions) is in preparation to do this calculation for you. Until then, the method above is sufficient. Mains, battery, or solar If an outlet is within reach, mains (110 V) is almost always the best choice: the most joules for your money, and no battery maintenance. It's the basis of a permanent fence near buildings. The 12 V battery helps out on sites without electricity and for temporary fences, at the cost of charge monitoring. Solar, on the other hand, is practical for a remote field or rotational grazing, but beware of the Quebec factor: short days and snow on the panel reduce recharging in winter. A solar unit that is sufficient in July may lack power in January. If the fence must operate all winter, go big with solar, or plan for mains. To compare the three in detail, see Solar, battery, or mains energizer. A word on safety: in Canada, an energizer sold for the local market is designed according to Canadian electrical standards (CSA), not the European standard found on devices imported from Europe. Look for certification on the device; it's the correct reference for Quebec. [IMAGE: the three types of power supply side by side (mains, battery, solar) in a Quebec context.] Winter and frozen ground: why aim higher This is what French tables can't tell you. Two local realities force you to size with reserve. Winter fur insulates: an animal with a long, dry coat is less affected by the shock, so the system needs to be stronger for the message to get through. More importantly, frozen ground conducts poorly. An electric fence needs the current to return through the ground to the grounding rod; however, ground frozen six months a year breaks this return, regardless of the power of the device. An oversized energizer never makes up for poor grounding in winter. The two go hand in hand. This is exactly the subject of our in-depth article on electric fences in winter and the problem of frozen ground, to read before the first snow, and our guide on grounding. Our recommendations by use (in stock) Concrete choices, in stock at F.G. Edwards. Gallagher is our primary range because it is rated in joules, which allows for honest comparison. Grounding does half the work We repeat it because it is the number one cause of fences that "don't shock": even powerful, an energizer is worthless without good grounding, because the current must return through the ground. A good basis is at least three 6 ft rods driven into moist soil, spaced about 10 ft apart, and roughly one more rod per joule of reserve. Plan for your rods and their clamp at the same time as the device: Gallagher 1.8 m (6 ft) galvanized grounding rod, $19.99, or 90 cm (3 ft) T-rod, $32.99 Gallagher ground clamp, $16.99, or Sentinel grounding clamp here Sentinel 4 ft red jumper cable to connect the device to the fence, here Sentinel lightning arrestor kit to protect your investment, here, and cutoff switch for safe work, here Details on the number of rods, their placement, and the method for testing your grounding can be found in our guide Grounding an Electric Fence. Choose, connect, check In summary: choose by joules, not by mileage. Calculate your actual line length (perimeter times number of wires), aim for a clean range of at least three times that length, then increase joules for summer vegetation and Quebec winter. Always pair the device with serious grounding. And after installation, measure the voltage on the line with a tester, because a nice number on the box never replaces a real reading.
