QUEBEC REGULATION · RESIDENTIAL POOLS

15 months left to comply

All residential pools must comply with Quebec's safety regulation by September 30, 2027. Three key requirements: a fence at least 1.2 m tall, openings that won't let a 10 cm sphere pass through, and a self-closing, self-latching gate.

Our 1x1 mesh (2.5 cm) meets the opening requirement. For the 1.2 m height requirement, choose the 4'x100' format.

Municipalities may impose stricter rules than the provincial standard. Check with yours before installing.

QUEBEC 2027 REGULATION · PREDATOR PROTECTION

Tight mesh for security-critical uses

  • Clôture de piscine conforme au règlement québécois
    Pool-regulation compliant

The 1x1 mesh (2.5 cm) meets the 10 cm sphere rule required by Quebec's residential pool regulation. 4 ft (1.2 m) height, the regulated minimum.

  • Protection contre les prédateurs
    Predator protection

Raccoons can't pull a hen through this mesh. Also blocks weasels, ermines, mink, raptors, and snakes.

  • Enclos de volaille avec plafond et jupe enterrée
    Full poultry coop

Combine with a ceiling and a buried apron for 360-degree protection. You'll find the components in our installation kit.

  • Check your municipality

Municipal requirements may be stricter than the provincial standard. Check with yours before installing.

Quebec's residential pool safety regulation applies to all pools no later than September 30, 2027. Our 1x1 mesh is designed for this application.

Technical specifications

Dimensions de la maille 1x1 annotées
Wire gauge 14ga (0.0768 in)
Why this gauge?

14 gauge (1.95 mm) provides the rigidity needed to stay upright under snow load without sagging. A thinner gauge flexes; a thicker gauge costs more without residential benefit.

Mesh 1"x1" (2.5 cm x 2.5 cm)
Why this mesh?

The 1x1 mesh (2.5 cm) meets the 10 cm sphere rule required by Quebec's residential pool regulation. It also blocks raccoons, weasels and other predators of poultry coops.

Height 3 ft
How to pick?

3 to 4 ft is enough for a garden or small animals. 4 to 5 ft for medium dogs. 5 to 6 ft for large dogs, perimeter fencing, or a tall poultry coop.

Roll length 100 ft
What length do I need?

Measure your perimeter before ordering. Add about 5% for overlaps at corners. For larger projects, multiple rolls can be joined at the posts.

Galvanization Hot-dip galvanized (HDG)
How long does it last?

Hot-dip galvanization (HDG) creates a protective zinc layer that resists rust for 10 to 15 years in normal Eastern Townships conditions. More durable than electrolytic galvanizing.

Roll weight 53400 kg
Handling

Rolls under 30 kg can be handled by one person. Above that, two people are recommended for unloading and unrolling along the posts. Above 60 kg, a lift gate is required for delivery.

Recommended install with T-posts spaced 8 ft apart · Residential install · Imported, inspected in West Brome

WHY SENTINEL

Sentinel vs the alternatives

The right choice depends on lifespan and use. Sentinel costs more per linear foot than cheap alternatives, but lasts 5 to 10 times longer and withstands Quebec's freeze-thaw cycle.

INSTALLATION

Installation in 4 steps

  • Estimated time: 4 to 6 hours
  • Difficulty: Beginner · 2 people
  • Tools: Post driver, gloves, galvanized wire
  1. Étape 1: planifier le tracé
    1

    Plan

Measure the perimeter. Count one post every 8 feet, plus two extra posts for corners.

Avoid: Don't measure diagonally. The mesh follows the perimeter path, not the straight line.

  2. Étape 2: planter les poteaux
    2

    Drive the posts

Drive the T-posts about 18 inches into the ground with the post driver.

Avoid: Don't drive the posts less than 18 inches deep. They'll tip at the first strong wind.

  3. Étape 3: dérouler le grillage
    3

    Unroll the mesh

Unroll the mesh along the posts. Anchor the first corner firmly before tensioning.

Avoid: Don't unroll without anchoring the first corner. The mesh will spring back and deform.

  4. Étape 4: fixer avec le fil d'attache
    4

    Secure with tie wire

Tie the mesh to each post with the galvanized wire. Tension well between posts to avoid sagging.

Avoid: Don't over-tension the mesh. It can warp or break the tie wire.

Frequently asked questions

Pool compliance

What height is compliant with the pool regulation?

The minimum height required by Quebec regulation is 1.2 m (about 4 feet). Our 4'x100' mesh matches this minimum exactly. Check your municipality's specific requirements, which may be stricter.

Is the 1x1 mesh really compliant?

The 1x1 (2.5 cm) mesh size meets the 10 cm sphere rule. Full compliance also depends on height (1.2 m minimum), the gate (self-closing and self-latching), and your municipality's specific rules. Consult your municipality before installing.

Does the Quebec regulation apply to my pool?

The Quebec Residential Pool Safety Regulation applies to all pools, including those installed before 2010. Pre-2010 pool owners have until September 30, 2027 to comply.

Is a compliant gate also required?

Yes. The regulation requires a self-closing, self-latching gate opening away from the pool, with the latching device at least 1.5 m above the ground. The gate matters as much as the fence for compliance.

Format selection

What's the difference vs the 2x4 mesh?

The 1x1 mesh (2.5 cm × 2.5 cm) is significantly tighter than the 2x4 (5 cm × 10 cm). It blocks small animals and predators that 2x4 lets through, and meets the pool regulation that 2x4 doesn't. The trade-off: more expensive and heavier.

Which predators does this mesh block?

Raccoons, weasels, ermines, mink, raptors, snakes. It does not block mice or very small rodents.

Installation

How do I install a buried skirt for a chicken run?

Bury 8 to 12 inches of L-shaped mesh at the base of the fence, bent outward. This skirt prevents predators from digging under to get in.

How many posts for 100 ft?

14 posts recommended: one every 8 feet, plus 2 for corners. The Sentinel installation kit includes the right quantity and post height for your roll.

Does a chicken run need a ceiling?

Recommended. Raptors, squirrels, and climbing raccoons can enter an open enclosure. A 1x1 mesh ceiling or sturdy netting provides 360-degree protection.

Can I install on existing wooden posts?

Yes. Use galvanized staples or tie wire. The technique is the same as with T-posts.

Durability

How long does the hot-dip galvanization last?

15 to 25 years under normal Eastern Townships conditions. Since 1x1 mesh has more surface per linear foot, the galvanization quality matters even more.

Delivery & pickup

The 1x1 mesh is heavy: how is delivery handled?

1x1 rolls weigh between 53 and 71 kg. For free local delivery ($95+, 40 km radius), we coordinate a window and arrive with two people. For the 4'x100' (71 kg), a liftgate is included.

AN F.G. EDWARDS BRAND

Sentinel is our durability commitment

F.G. Edwards has served the Eastern Townships since 1928. Four generations advising Quebec farmers, ranchers, and homeowners on the right materials for their projects. West Brome at the heart, Bedford as our second store, and our team delivering within a 40 km radius.

Sentinel is our house brand for everything fence-related: from electric tape and wire for livestock, to welded mesh for gardens, animal pens, and residential pool fencing. We created it because we were tired of seeing Quebecers stuck choosing between oversized commercial products and cheap gear that rusts or breaks in three seasons.

Every Sentinel item is inspected in West Brome before shipping. If you have a question about the right format, installation, or what fits your land, call us or stop by the store. That's what's set us apart for nearly a hundred years.
