The standard fence for four residential uses
GardenBlocks rabbits, groundhogs, raccoons, and neighborhood cats. Open enough to let air and light through to your plants. 3 or 4 ft height recommended.
Dog enclosureHot-dip galvanized wire stands up to teeth and Quebec seasons. Pick the height to fit the breed: 4 ft for medium dogs, 5 to 6 ft for large dogs.
Perimeter fenceMarks your property line without blocking the view. 5 to 6 ft tall, 100 ft per roll. Discreet, neutral, durable.
Outdoor poultry coopFor the general structure of a large coop. Combine with our 1x1 mesh for predator protection at critical points.
For security-critical uses (pool fencing or predator-proof poultry coops), see our tight 1x1 mesh.
Technical specifications
Why this gauge?
14 gauge (1.95 mm) provides the rigidity needed to stay upright under snow load without sagging. A thinner gauge flexes; a thicker gauge costs more without residential benefit.
Why this mesh?
The 2x4 mesh stays open enough to let air and light through to your plants, and tight enough to block rabbits, groundhogs and cats. For pools or poultry coops, see our 1x1 mesh instead.
How to pick?
3 to 4 ft is enough for a garden or small animals. 4 to 5 ft for medium dogs. 5 to 6 ft for large dogs, perimeter fencing, or a tall poultry coop.
What length do I need?
Measure your perimeter before ordering. Add about 5% for overlaps at corners. For larger projects, multiple rolls can be joined at the posts.
How long does it last?
Hot-dip galvanization (HDG) creates a protective zinc layer that resists rust for 10 to 15 years in normal Eastern Townships conditions. More durable than electrolytic galvanizing.
Handling
Rolls under 30 kg can be handled by one person. Above that, two people are recommended for unloading and unrolling along the posts. Above 60 kg, a lift gate is required for delivery.
Recommended install with T-posts spaced 8 ft apart · Residential install · Imported, inspected in West Brome
Sentinel vs the alternatives
The right choice depends on lifespan and use. Sentinel costs more per linear foot than cheap alternatives, but lasts 5 to 10 times longer and withstands Quebec's freeze-thaw cycle.
| Criterion | SENTINEL HDG welded mesh | Light chicken wire | Plastic garden mesh | Prefab fence panels |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lifespan | 10 to 15 years Based on industry standards for hot-dip galvanizing (AGA, ASTM A641) in residential use. Actual lifespan varies depending on exposure to moisture, salt, and soil contact. | 1 to 2 years | 2 to 3 years | 5 to 10 years |
| Price per 100 linear ft | $136 to $330 | $50 to $90 | $30 to $60 | $800 and up |
| Wire gauge | 14ga (1.95 mm) | 20-22ga (thin) | n/a (plastic) | Varies |
| Galvanization | Hot-dip (HDG) | Electrolytic or none | n/a | Paint |
| Withstands Quebec freeze-thaw | Yes | Partial | No, crumbles | Yes |
| Blocks raccoons and weasels | Yes with 1x1 | No | No | Varies |
| Quebec 2027 pool regulation compliant | Yes with 1x1 | No | No | Varies |
Prices and lifespans are indicative, based on typical products found at major home improvement stores. Your results may vary depending on exposure to salt, moisture, and installation conditions.

Installation in 4 steps
1Plan
Measure the perimeter. Count one post every 8 feet, plus two extra posts for corners.
Avoid: Don't measure diagonally. The mesh follows the perimeter path, not the straight line.
2Drive the posts
Drive the T-posts about 18 inches into the ground with the post driver.
Avoid: Don't drive the posts less than 18 inches deep. They'll tip at the first strong wind.
3Unroll the mesh
Unroll the mesh along the posts. Anchor the first corner firmly before tensioning.
Avoid: Don't unroll without anchoring the first corner. The mesh will spring back and deform.
4Secure with tie wire
Tie the mesh to each post with the galvanized wire. Tension well between posts to avoid sagging.
Avoid: Don't over-tension the mesh. It can warp or break the tie wire.
Frequently asked questions
Format selection
Which format should I choose for my fence?
For a garden, 3'x100' or 4'x100' is enough. For a medium dog, 4'x100' is the most popular choice. For a large dog or perimeter, go with 5'x100' or 6'x100'. For small projects or a tight budget, the 50' rolls (4', 5' or 6') are lighter to handle.
How many rolls do I need for a 200-ft perimeter?
Two 100-ft rolls, plus about 5% overlap at corners. After overlap, expect two rolls to cover 190 to 195 linear feet of layout.
Is 2x4 mesh suitable for a chicken run?
For the outer structure of a large run, yes. For predator protection (raccoons, weasels), no. See our 1x1 tight mesh for critical zones (buried skirt, ceiling).
Is this mesh suitable for my pool?
No. The Quebec regulation requires that openings cannot allow a 10 cm sphere to pass. The 2"x4" mesh (5 x 10 cm) does not meet this rule. See our 1"x1" mesh for pool fencing.
Installation
How many T-posts per 100-ft roll?
14 posts recommended: one every 8 feet, plus 2 for corners. The Sentinel installation kit includes the exact quantity for the roll you choose.
How do I cut the mesh cleanly?
Use tin snips or heavy-duty wire cutters. Cut perpendicular to the wire to avoid sharp protruding ends. File down ends if needed.
How do I join two rolls?
Overlap the two ends by 4 to 6 inches on a shared post, then tie together with galvanized wire every 6 inches. The joining post becomes a regular intermediate post.
Can I install on existing wooden posts?
Yes. Use galvanized staples or tie wire wrapped around the post. The technique is the same; only the fastening differs.
Can I install this fence myself?
Yes, most residential installations take 4 to 6 hours with two people. See our installation guide.
Durability
How long does the hot-dip galvanization last?
Our hot-dip galvanization protects against rust for 15 to 25 years under normal Eastern Townships conditions.
Will the mesh rust where I cut it?
Cut ends have a thinner zinc layer and may rust first. File the ends to reduce exposure, or apply a touch of cold-galvanized paint to protect the cuts.

F.G. Edwards has served the Eastern Townships since 1928. Four generations advising Quebec farmers, ranchers, and homeowners on the right materials for their projects. West Brome at the heart, Bedford as our second store, and our team delivering within a 40 km radius.
Sentinel is our house brand for everything fence-related: from electric tape and wire for livestock, to welded mesh for gardens, animal pens, and residential pool fencing. We created it because we were tired of seeing Quebecers stuck choosing between oversized commercial products and cheap gear that rusts or breaks in three seasons.
Every Sentinel item is inspected in West Brome before shipping. If you have a question about the right format, installation, or what fits your land, call us or stop by the store. That's what's set us apart for nearly a hundred years.
